The Deep Blue Sea

Flat – a wooden frame with canvas stretched over that can be erected on the stage to form walls, can be painted to form back drops, there are also specialist flats that hold doors and windows. We are using 2.4 m (8ft)  tall flats of varying widths
Tonight is the 4th night of the build for the  deep blue sea now it looks like we have done something l thought I would update you.
First of all the play is The deep blue sea by  Terence Rattigan and is not a stage version of  the film the with the sharks and Samuel L ‘mutha effing’ Jackson (as awesome as that would be) . The play follows  Freddie who use to be  used to be a fighter pilot but is now reduced to idleness and whisky. Hester who  used to be a judge’s wife but has given up everything for love and Mr Miller who used to be a doctor …  with the door closed on their old lives and unable to return to what they once were we see if they are able to carve new lives out for themselves.
This build has been a challenge I am working with two excellent designers Hugh and Carol, I will always jump at the chance to work with them not only because they are great designers but they even provide you with toasties during the build win!,  and an awesome build team. Together we are modestly known as the dream team…. *shifty eyes*
With rehearsals and the build tonight will be the 5th night in a row at the theatre, I am getting a little tired now and was a tad grumpy last night (sorry guys) because a flat decided that it did not want to sit square against another one! Silly I know but I went from my day job straight to the build and was tired before I started! I can’t wait for the day that I am tired and grumpy because I have built for 8 hours have 5 more to go J
I am not sleeping well  lately either pretty much since the start of the year I have been restless a lot of talking in my sleep and walking/shifting about. Apparently I rolled over the other night proceeded to tell Mr D (the other half) to wake up and nudged  him until he did and asked me what was wrong,  apparently I just started to snore! I have no recollection of this as I was fast asleep needless to say he was not impressed to quote  him “I could have smothered you in your sleep right there and then!”
Without giving to much away about the set (you will have to go and get tickets to see it if you want to see it in its glory!) we have finished the basic stencilling pattern which is in place of wall paper because believe it or not it is more of a chore to wallpaper a flat! We just have to go around then again to do the fiddly bits that is tonight’s job! Then we have coving and architrave to add and the blitz pieces add another door and paint the floor then I think we will be done….but don’t hold me to that!
The fire place is finished it was a smaller job than I was expecting because we found a fireplace mantle that was pretty spot on in the props cupboard so instead of building it from scratch (which I had hoped and was a little disappointed that I did not get to do)  it was more a case of altering it and cosmetic repairs to suit the design  and ensure our “gas” fire would fit in it.
All in all it has been a blast. There was a theatre open night last night for people wishing to become members  to have a look  around. I hope we did not scare any of them away when the get together to build it is more akin to ‘carry on set build’  than a professional  operation with more nudges and winks about our tools and wood that Sid James would know what to do with!!!
The main bug bee on the build is the same as every build the lack of tools and the state of the workshop. Unfortunately there is no one in charge of the workshop and as it is a voluntary organisation things are just thrown in there after a strike and you spend most of the time looking for something – the previous strike team NEVER put the drills on charge when they are done (once again they are just thrown anywhere) my motto is bring your own tools!
The cast are shaping up well from what I have seen in rehearsals  I am really impressed . hopefully I will get to see a run through of it before the show nights when I will be relegated backstage!
Will keep you posted and may even treat you to some Pics when the show is up and running!
